Catherine Swartz

Catherine “Ann” Swartz of Chatham, NJ passed away on September 17 peacefully in her home and surrounded by her family. She was 80 years old.

Born in Orange, NJ to the late Clara and Henry Russell Phillips, Ann grew up in West Orange, attended Miss Beard School (now Morristown Beard) and Colby Sawyer College.

A longtime Short Hills resident, Ann was a tireless volunteer in her community while raising three sons with her former husband Thomas J. Swartz, Jr., also of Chatham. In that time Ann was a member of Rock Spring Club, the Junior League of Short Hills and the Oranges and the docent corps at The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum. Her tenure as President of New Eyes for the Needy led her to be awarded “Jerseyan of the Month” by the Newark Star Ledger.

After a twenty year career in Real Estate she was employed as an executive administrator for Terra Nova Brokerage Co. in Chester, NJ and upon retirement enjoyed her favorite pastimes, tennis, golf, paddle tennis, and her grandchildren’s activities.

Ann was also predeceased by her brothers Charles and Russell Phillips. She is survived by her adoring sons; Thomas III of Chatham, Gary and his wife the former Sara Doremus of Chester, NJ and Craig and his wife the former Karen Eldracher also of Chatham, four grandchildren Betsy and Kyle Swartz and Kathleen and Kurt Swartz, as well as her loving former husband and several nieces and nephews.
