Kern, Beverly Claire, of Chatham, died early Friday, August 3, 2012, from complications of a stroke in May. Born and raised in Irvington, Beverly graduated from Irvington High School at age 16, achieving both athletic and academic honors. After graduation, she moved with her family to Chatham Township and worked for a short time at Elastic Stopnut. Her move to the “country” would lead her to find the love of her life, Harry E. Kern, Jr. of New Providence. Beverly and Harry were married October 15, 1949, and remained in Chatham Township throughout their 55 year marriage , raising their 3 daughters, Karen, Susan and Nancy. Beverly enjoyed 40 consecutive years of summers at her home in Ocean Beach III. She and Harry delighted in their family gatherings at the shore house, when the whole gang would celebrate together. Beverly and Harry were passionate members of the Antique Automobile Club of America, NJ Region I. Together they enjoyed the summertime tours, exploring the eastern United States. They were also avid collectors of antiques, concentrating on their collection of clocks and oil lamps. No weekend was complete unless they found a house, yard or estate sale at which they searched for treasures. In her retirement, Beverly discovered a passion for reading, and especially enjoyed Mary Higgins Clark novels. Beverly was honored to share friendships with Norma, Lois, Margaret, Doris, Bette, Lillian and Pauline, and her many friends at Sunrise in Morris Plains.
