Bertha Anne Kennedy, 84, of Chatham Twp, passed away on March 17, 2014. Born in Middletown, NY, Bertha lived in Summit before moving to Chatham in 1955. The Class of 1947 Valedictorian of Southside High School, Bertha met her husband, James Kennedy, in Newark, at South Park Presbyterian Church. Bertha worked as the assistant to the town clerk of Chatham Township. Bertha was a charter member, elder and deacon at Chatham Township Presbyterian Church. She was a past President of the AFS exchange student program, adult chapter. She was an avid fan of her children’s sports teams, as well as being quite the athlete herself, having bowled a three hundred game, and playing tennis. Bertha was also an artistic person, who hosted arts and crafts classes at the Senior Center in Chatham.
Bertha is survived by her husband James, children Cathy Schopp and her husband Ken, Brian Kennedy and his wife Marion and Robert Kennedy and his wife Mary; grandchildren Caitlin Hutchison and her husband Brian, Matthew Schopp and his wife Leigh, Nora Strickler and her husband John, Rae and James Kennedy, Kelly, Bonnie and Casey Kennedy; and great grandchild Declan Hutchison.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 11:30am at the Chatham Twp Presbyterian Church, 240 Southern Boulevard in Chatham. There will be a visitation on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home 345 Main Street in Chatham.
